Burger King ‘sorry’ for offering Russian women free burgers for getting pregnant by soccer stars

Burger King Russia has apologised for an advert offering Russian women free Whopper burgers for life if they get pregnant by a World Cup soccer player.

The Russian arm of the fast food chain is in damage control after a World Cup inspired promotion on Russian social media network VKontakte.

The post, which featured a photo of a pregnant woman, quickly went viral.

The poorly thought-out post was reported on by Russian masthead Riafan and Eurosport RU, among countless other outlets.

We had to use Google translate to interpret the copy.

While the translation is a little clunky, you can still understand why this was such a terrible marketing idea.

“Burger King, within the framework of social responsibility, has appointed a reward for girls who become pregnant from the stars of world football,” it read.

“Each will receive [$64,000] and a lifetime supply of Whoppers.

“Girls who will be able to get the best football genes, will lay the success of the Russian national team for several generations ahead.”

After copping some serious backlash, the post was removed.

However, screenshots of the promotion are still doing the rounds on social media and Reddit.

Burger King Russia put out another statement on the social media platform on Wednesday afternoon:

“We are sorry about the clearly offensive promotion that the team in Russia launched online,” a Burger King Russia spokesperson told the Associated Press.

“[The offer] does not reflect our brand or our values and we are taking steps to ensure this type of activity does not happen again.”
