'Glad we fooled you': Claudia Karavan returns from death in Bump Christmas movie – but not everything is what it seems

EXCLUSIVE: Viewers were left heartbroken when Claudia Karvan's character Angie lost her battle with cancer in Bump's final season, which aired late 2024.

This year, fans can forget the tragedy for a brief moment as Angie returns from death and Claudia returns to screens in Bump: A Christmas Film.

Of course, not everything is quite as it seems with the festive movie set before Angie's death.

The movie sees the Chalmer-Davis family jet to Colombia for a Christmas cruise to visit Rosa's home country, and as is to be expected, chaos unfolds.

While the crew really did jet to Colombia to film some parts of the movie, Karvan says it wasn't the farewell holiday that audiences are imagining.

"I hate to break the illusion, but I went for 10 days with Carlos, and I went for six days with Paula, so we were never there as a big group," she tells 9Entertainment.

"It's all broken mirrors, but I'm so glad we fooled you."

But Karvan reassures that the cast still had the time of their lives "pretending to be over there", with the majority of filming taking place here in Sydney.

"It was just manic and hilarious," she laughs.

With the cast coming together one final time for the film, it meant they all had to prepare themselves to say farewell for good.

Karvan has been a part of the Bump TV family for years now. So long that she says she now basically considers the cast as real family, which made saying goodbye even harder.

"You sort of look to the future and wonder whether anything like this will happen in your life again," she says.

In the film and TV industry, Karvan says that it's "a bit of a miracle" to work with a group of people and still be close friends after five years of "long hours and quite stressful working environments".

"We've all got long-standing friendships with each other, so we'll see each other outside of work, but as a great big team together, yeah, you have a little mourning," she explains.

The actress recalls the last day on set for the film as "very, very sad", sharing that it involved lots of tears, cuddles, selfies and handwritten cards.

"It was sad," she says.

"It was a night shoot, so it was cold and dark, so there wasn't a lot of partying, but yeah, it was very, very sad.

"Just a sort of sense of emptiness that that's probably an unrepeatable thing."

Despite the sadness, it's clear that Karvan wouldn't trade the experience for the world, laughing as she reflects on her time in Colombia as "guerrilla filmmaking".

"We went to Medellin and Bogota, and the islands of Peru. We hired a little boat, and we filmed lots of holiday movie-type, family movie-type footage together," she explains.

"I put on my own wig and did my own hair and makeup, got the Sharpie pen out and drew on Carlos' tattoos. It was just really guerrilla filmmaking."

As for what fans can expect from the film, Karvan tries not to give too much away, describing the conclusion with one word: Fireworks.

"That's it. I mean, they're all alive," she laughs.

"No one drowns off the cruise. No one fell off the ship. No one got chopped up by the cruise ship propeller.  And everyone's ready to travel a lot more in the new year."
