‘Amish Uber’ ridesharing service just a man, a horse and a buggy full of dreams

This might not be the most practical way to get home from the pub, but it certainly would make for a nice yarn at brunch the next day.

It’s called Amish Uber… well, not official, because we reckon there are probably a few trademark laws that have been bent here.

An Amish bloke called Timothy Hochstedler has been running his ridesharing service in Colon, Michigan, using a horse and buggy.

His cheeky business venture is going viral after he appeared on a local news bulletin from WWMT.

The story reached wider audiences after appearing on US network ABC 6, before being shared on social media and Reddit.

And, of course, it was all over the Colon Township Library Facebook page.

Now, many people are familiar with Uber – the ridesharing service that involves a driver, a car and a smartphone app.

But because Hochstedler is Amish, a religion that shuns modern technology, his service is a little different.

As he told WWMT journo Anna Giles, his ride only packs one horse power – an actual horse.

Rather than using smartphones to hook up with his customers, passengers had to flag Hochstedler down if they wanted a ride.

But, according to a post from the Colon Township Library Facebook page, a telephone booking system has since been set up for Hochstedler’s service after a spike in popularity.
