Academy Award winner Matt Damon has confirmed a 26-year-old rumour from the set of Saving Private Ryan.

The actor, 53, starred alongside Tom Hanks in the 1998 blockbuster that would go on to win Best Drama and Best Director at the 56th Golden Globe Awards.

And for good reason.

Turns out, there was a surprise tactic director Steven Spielberg used to capture the 'drama' between characters, which Matt hilariously revealed in a resurfaced video.

You can hear exactly what he said in the video above.

"Is it true that Steven Spielberg excluded you purposely from the military training on the set of Saving Private Ryan to create a real resentment between the rest of the cast and you?" Hot Ones host Sean Evans quizzed the actor.

"Yes, that's totally true!" Matt confirmed right after eating a hot wing that almost brought him to tears.

As is often the case with war movies, an intensive 10-day boot camp was implemented by the production for the cast.

"I was such a young diligent actor, I was ready to go to boot camp and he [Steven Spielberg] said, 'Absolutely not'," Matt recalled.

He goes, 'You can train in any way you want. But I'm separating you from the other guys'."

Spielberg didn't want Damon bonding with the cast and wanted to create a feeling of resentment in the actors to reflect the way their characters felt in the film.

Those "other guys" included Matt's A-list co-stars Edward Burns, Barry Pepper, Adam Goldberg, and Vin Diesel among others in the film that was released 26 years ago.

"[The cast] really did, they were totally resentful every time they brought up boot camp because I think it rained the whole time, I think they had a tough few days," Matt smiled.

One particular hot question, was what drew Matt to his 2009 thriller comedy The Informant!, which Matt revealed came at time where his career was "bombing".

"[Director] Steven Soderbergh incidentally asked me to do it at a time in my career where it looked like I was going that way," said Matt as he motioned his hand in a downhill landslide.

"The Bourne Identity hadn't come out, I had a bunch of bombs, Steven called me and I remember he told me about it and I didn't realise he was offering me to star in it because nobody had offered me a job in a while.

Speaking to Sean, Matt opened up about that time in his life below:

"I couldn't believe it, we sat on it for a number of years until the timing worked out... and it was one of my favourite things I've done.

"I'm proud of the movie we did," Matt beamed.

In fact, the star rated the film as one of his top five performances that define his career among Stillwater, Good Will Hunting, Courage Under Fire and The Talented Mr. Ripley.
