'America's most notorious criminal' was released from prison, what she did next was kept a secret from the world

The world was watching when Gypsy-Rose Blanchard was released from prison after the brutal murder of her own mother Claudine "Dee Dee" Blanchard.

Labelled as "one of America's most notorious criminals" by 60 Minutes, Gypsy-Rose, 33, also became an unlikely reality star.

Her first 12 hours of freedom were kept a secret from the world in 2023, until she released the footage last year, in a now resurfaced video you can watch above.

Gypsy-Rose grew up believing she was seriously ill as her mother Dee Dee fabricated numerous illnesses and disabilities. She subjected Gypsy to unnecessary medical treatments for years and is believed to have suffered with Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

To escape this life, Gypsy-Rose conspired with her then online boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to murder her mother in 2015.

Gypsy-Rose pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was released on parole in December 2023.

Taken from her powerful documentary Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up (2024), Gypsy attempts to rewrite her story after serving eight of her 10-year prison sentence.

No cameras were allowed at the prison for Gypsy's release.

But her husband at the time, now ex-husband Ryan Scott Anderson, captured the footage below:

"You're free" were the words Gypsy heard after being granted parole December 28, 2023.

The TikTok world was obsessed. But much to the online world's disappointment, Gypsy's release was a discreet operation done in the middle of the night.

No paparazzi photos were taken, no live footage was released at the time. The only public photos and footage came from the morning after her release.

Six months later, Gypsy told her story in Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up released in June 2024.

Of course, life outside looked much different after eight years had passed.

In a second video, released in the documentary, Gypsy revealed her surprise first meal after being released, took her first selfie and used a smart phone for the very first time.

By rewriting her story in the documentary, Gypsy said she's "outgrown the prison version" of herself.

"I wanna be Gypsy-Rose Blanchard, a survivor, an advocate for people that have been through what I've been through, and I want to be someone my family can be proud of."

The life of Gypsy-Rose Blanchard

Raised by single mother Claudine "Dee Dee" Blanchard, Gypsy-Rose spent decades believing she was seriously ill.

"There was a long list of medical illnesses that my mum told the doctors that I had, ranging from muscular dystrophy to leukaemia, hearing impaired, vision impaired," Gypsy-Rose recalled in a 60 minutes interview.

For years, Dee Dee confined Gypsy-Rose to a wheelchair and forced her to undergo dozens of unnecessary medical procedures.

By the time Gypsy-Rose reached her early 20s, she was desperate to be free.
