Emotional moment cancer survivor sees his new face after spending a year without a nose on Body Parts

In Body Parts, anaplastologist Allison Vest combines art and science to create high quality prosthetics for patients who have missing or malformed anatomy.

And in one episode, we get a first-hand glimpse of the incredible work she does.

In her Texas-based clinic Allison met with Jay Jaszkowski, a man who lost his nose following a cancer battle.

The loss impacted every part of Jay's life. He no longer socialised much or dated and made talking to clients at work "very difficult".

"It's been embarrassing. I don't like walking around looking like a freak," Jay said.

"I'd like to get back my normal life and some confidence, I'm definitely looking for someone to get married to and what comes to mind for me is a new nose."

Allison felt for Jay and his experience and hoped to be able to give him back his nose and his confidence.

"Losing a nose, losing something that's literally front and centre to your face, something that defines your profile, is really traumatic. Your identity can be lost," Allison empathised with Jay.

During the consultation, Allison assessed the condition of Jay's skin and with everything looking well healed, the pair could discuss designing and forming his new nose.

They went through old photos of Jay with his original nose as a starting point for the process.

"[My nose] was a little bigger than I liked," Jay joked. "Actually now that I think about it I really like my nose big or not."

Allison and her apprentice Kathryn get to work fitting different prosthetics on Jay's face to see which shape fits best.

It's a long process that involves a lot of customisation of shape, size, angle and colour.

"Even if we had the exact shape of his nose from before his surgery, it would not automatically fit back on his face now. Things have changed and that's where the anaplastologist comes in to try and meld those two things together," Allison explained.

After Allison experimented with different shapes and at times disagreed with Jay over what suited best, the big moment finally arrived.

It was time for Jay to see his new nose.

Jay gasped as he set eyes on his new reflection.

"Oh look at that! It blends in, that looks great," Jay reacted initially.

"I looks like me!"

He then shed tears as he realised his world was about to change for the better and leaned in to give Allison a hug.

"It was shocking to see myself with a nose on for the first time it made me very emotional to see a nose there where a hole has been for almost a year," Jay said of his transformation.
