5 of the weirdest addictions from My Strange Addiction

Peter Conte

If you've seen an episode or two of My Strange Addiction, which is available to watch on 9Now, then you'd be aware that some people are heavily invested in areas you didn't think possible.

From body casting to eating mattresses, here are five of the weirdest that caught our eye:

Body Casting

If a bone breaks then a cast is a relatively common way to make sure that it heals correctly. Kevin, 27, has taken this to the extreme. In his words, "I don't have any broken bones, but I'm addicted to putting orthopaedic casts on my body."

This involves putting a cast on himself and often going out in public where he "loves seeing 'ohhh' — that gawk look."

Kevin admits his cast addiction has caused complications in his life, including leading to him and his fiancée splitting.

It doesn't stop at an arm or a leg either. Having spent over $50,000 on supplies, Kevin's casts sometimes cover over half of his body.

Pony Play

Nicole, 31, is addicted to Pony Play — a form of costume role play. In her words, "You become an animal mentally and act accordingly."

This involves dressing up as a pony, rolling in hay, eating celery, neighing, being groomed, training and carting.

"For me this is probably the biggest source of happiness in my life," reveals Nicole.

Eats Mattresses

We never imagined a food addiction would turn towards the direction of mattresses, but for Jennifer, eating mattresses is a habit that she enjoys "plain and straight up".

She even sneaks into her mum's room to eat her mattress while she's in the shower.

"The reason why I'm not eating my own mattress is because I ate my mattress already," she reveals.

Addicted to Inflatables

Mark, 20, is in a relationship with 15 inflatable animals. He watches TV with them, bathes them, kisses them and takes them out swimming. Despite this, his relationship with his inflatables is not sexual.

Mark turned to inflatables when he was 14, explaining, "My mother really wasn't there for me when I was a child. The first time I hugged my inflatable whale I actually started feeling all that love and compassion that I never got from my mother."

Addicted to Her Hair Dryer

Perhaps one of the most dangerous addictions, 31-year-old Lori is addicted to sleeping with her hair dryer on, which she sleeps next to for up to eight hours a night.

The addiction has caused Lori physical harm, where one night "the blow dryer had just attacked" her and caused multiple blisters. Another time it caused a carpet burn, when it fell off the bed face down into the carpet and burned a hole right through it.

Lori's 3-year-old daughter also struggles with addiction to sleeping with the hair dryer on, which is a major concern for Lori.
