Couple fall in love with a stunning refurbished blacksmith shed on Country House Hunters Australia

Saying goodbye to the city and moving out to the country for a tree change is becoming more and more common – just ask this year's Block teams, who are creating incredible homes in Victoria's Macedon Ranges.

And if you can't get enough of country real estate, Country House Hunters Australia could be the show for you, with new episodes from Season 3 beginning to drop on 9Now.

Hosted by Getaway's Catriona Rowntree, each episode follow's a family's journey to purchasing a property in country Australia.

Catriona takes potential buyers through a range of properties that fit what they're looking for, and after touring and commenting on the properties, the prospective buyers then decide to either purchase one of the homes they've inspected, or continue their search.

In a recent episode Catriona helped couple Tom and Kathy search for a home in Beechworth – located a three hour drive north east of Melbourne – that fit into their $1 million budget.

The couple were looking for a home for their retirement, and wanted it to have a bit of country charm.

"It was a no brainer for this to be our retirement base," Kathy explained. "It's quite a creative area here. There's a lot of people moving into town."

Catriona explained the couple are keen gardeners, which means for them the house itself was only half of the challenge, and they would also be paying close attention to outdoor areas.

"We want sustainability, we don't want a lot of maintenance," Kathy said.

The first house Catriona showed the couple was located in the centre of town, and had been freshly renovated.

Returnees to the area, Kathy noticed that the property had been restored, which was "lovely to see".

The house featured mainly neutral tones of white and light wood, with brand new appliances. But Catriona noted that there was one common household item missing.

"I think it's interesting that there is the connection for a TV but there is no TV on the wall anymore because so many people now just use their computers and their phone," she said.

Tom and Kathy were pleased with the home, including its small vegetable garden and that it had a lot of roof space for solar panel installation.

The only problem with the home – that came in under budget at $895,000 – was that it is in Kathy's words, "a bit land locked".

The second place Catriona showed the couple was a Victorian-era home with an established garden.

Inside the house was filled with character, with high arches, wall pannelling and ceiling details. Each room also had a trap door that led down to a subfloor.

"It's been restored to the original style," Tom noted, and it was clear that the couple were impressed with the space. The house still had its original kitchen too.

Outside the gardens were expansive and Catriona exclaimed she would "do anything for a garden like this".

Kathy and Tom expected it to be above their budget and they were right. The property was listed for $1.2 million.

"It's worth it. It's superb. You're not going to find many like this," Tom said.

The final house Catriona showed the couple was a blacksmith shed that had been converted into an energy efficient modern-style house.

Once inside the history of the building became more apparent, with soaring ceilings that featured timber beams.

"I love the way they've kept all the timber," Tom said.

Catriona added the timber is actually from 17 local trees.

"It's so different. It's not something you'd expect to find here in town," Tom said.

The three-bedroom home also featured a courtyard and a large garden with a view, and was on the market for between $900,000 and $950,000.

Catriona felt that this would be the home they would lean towards, and she was right.

"We'll go for the smithy," Tom said, having been won over by the incredible and unique property.

The couple put in an offer and it was accepted.
