No more Segways for Queensland police

The Queensland Police Service won't be expanding the use of Segways after a 10 month-trial.

The self-balancing machines were trialled in Cairns, Brisbane's South Bank, Noosa and the Gold Coast, making Queensland's police the first in Australia to use the high-tech contraptions.

The trial period ran from September 2013 to July last year.

Segways are used in many European countries and throughout the US by the public as a means to get around.

A Queensland police spokesman said South Bank and Noosa have opted to keep the Segways, while the other police stations said the machines were not helpful with law enforcement.

"QPS does not have any plans to expand the use of Segways," the spokesman told AAP.

The trial reportedly cost $40,000.
