Youngest Bourke Street victims to be farewelled at private funerals

Ten-year-old Thalia Hakin and three-month-old Zachary Bryant will be farewelled at private funerals in Melbourne, after they were killed when a car drove into pedestrians in the Bourke Street Mall last Friday.

The children were among five people who died at the pedestrian mall and in hospital, with Jess Mudie, 22, Matthew Si, 33, and a 25-year-old Japanese national also among those killed.

Zachary’s loved ones will attend a service for him at UMMA Centre in Doncaster East today, after his parents earlier paid tribute to him in a statement.

Matthew and Nawwar Bryant described their baby son as “the light of their lives”.

“He leaves us with the best three months and 14 days of wonderful memories spent in this world,” the statement read.

“He was the most beautiful, loving, happy and perfect little baby we were so lucky to be gifted with.”

Their daughter Zara was also injured in the Bourke Street tragedy, and remains in a stable condition at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

The Hakin family will hold a private service for Thalia tomorrow, which will be streamed live online.

Thalia’s funeral procession will stop at her school, Beth Rivkah Ladies College in St Kilda East, before she is laid to rest at MCK Lyndhurst Cemetery.

Members of the Jewish community held a memorial service for her and the other victims on Sunday.

A floral tribute on the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Streets continues to grow with cards, toys and tokens left to honour the victims.

Thousands of people flocked to Federation Square yesterday for a public vigil, which was attended by Premier Daniel Andrews, Opposition Leader Bill Shortern and Victorian Governor Linda Dessau.
