The sister and football mates of the Gold Coast man allegedly set on fire and murdered by his brother have paid tribute to the “lovable guy”.

It is believed Ethan Clarke, 22, poured accelerant over his brother Reece, 26, before igniting the blaze and severely burning his alleged victim, who later died in a Brisbane hospital yesterday.

In an emotional post on Facebook, Katina Clarke urged people to tell those closest to them that they were loved and said her brother would be “epically missed”.

“Be in peace Reece. I feel I didn't say this enough but I love you, and I hope everyone takes a moment to appreciate their loved ones and to tell them so,” she said.

Ms Clarke asked friends to share photographs and stories of Reece, 26, a talented rugby player and stay away from negative comments about the painful circumstances of his death.

“We will all continue to be aware of what has happened for years to come.”

Ms Clarke said her brother liked almost everyone and had a multifaceted and larger-than-life personality.

Today, two of Reece's former football teams played against each other.

The Runaway Bay Seagulls and the Tugun Seahawks paused for a moment's silence before the match and remembered a much-loved member of both teams.

“It’s really hard. He was one of these guys who could joke about anything and everything,” Graham Gleeson of the Seagulls said.

“He’s just a lovable guy.”

Emergency services were called to the home on Bushmead Street in Nerang about 1.30am today, where Mr Clarke, was found suffering severe burns.

"The burns were as bad as you could get," Nerang police Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Procter said.

“I really can’t go into how it all happened … that will form part of our brief.”

The father of the two men was also injured in the blaze.

Reece’s younger brother Ethan fled the scene but was arrested in Brisbane several hours later where he was questioned before being charged with murder.

Neighbour Lester Underwood said the family were “a good family”.

“They’ve had their times. But they’re a good family,” she told 9NEWS.

Mr Clarke, who was once charged over the murder of Gold Coast father Greg Dufty before charges were later dropped, will remain in custody at Southport Police Station this evening.
