Yoko Ono did not suffer a stroke and is 'fine', her son Sean has advised after she was taken to hospital.

Initial US media reports suggested the Japanese-born artist and musician, who is John Lennon's widow, had suffered a possible stroke when she was taken from her New York home to hospital late Friday local time.

However, Sean Ono Lennon took to Twitter to clarify his mother's symptoms.

"Was NOT a stroke, just dehydration/tired. She is FINE. Thank you everyone for your concern," he wrote.

"Only stroke @yokoono had was a Stroke of Genius! :-) She's really fine. Thanks for all the well wishes! Big Love, Sean," he wrote in a later tweet. 

Ono's spokesman Elliot Mintz said she appeared to have "just an advanced case of the flu", ABC News reported.

She went to hospital on her doctor's recommendation, Mr Mintz said.

Ono turned 83 this month and last week released a remix album, titled 'Yes, I'm a Witch Too'.

She could be released from New York's Mount Sinai Hospital as early as tomorrow, Mr Mintz said.
