Teen hands himself in after woman sexually assaulted on Melbourne bus

An 18-year-old has handed himself into police after a woman was sexually assaulted on a bus in Melbourne’s west.

The victim, who requested not to be identified, boarded a route 903 bus home from Sunshine Railway Station about 6pm following a day of shopping on December 27.

“As I was getting up to leave the bus, I felt a hand rub against me from behind. At first I didn’t know what happened, I thought it was a chair or something,” she said.

“But when I looked back at him… I saw him look away from me quickly.”

She said that as she left the bus, she turned once more to face her attacker, and saw him “smirking”.

“I was scared, because I didn’t know whether he was going to get off the bus with me,” the woman said

The man did not follow the victim, who quickly called her fiancé and returned home.

This afternoon a teenager from Norlane handed himself in to Corio Police Station.

Charges are yet to be laid.

Earlier, Constable Ryan Hopkins from Victoria Police said the suspect was not known to police.

“Acts like this on the public transport system will not be tolerated by Victoria Police,” Const. Hopkins said.

“It’s a low offence.”

The victim said she is now “really cautious” about using public transport and is paranoid to leave her home.

“It’s pretty hard, sometimes I don’t want to go out on my own,” she said.

“I’m always checking, looking around me.

“It’s scary knowing that (the attacker could be around), you never know what they are capable of.”
