A man charged over the alleged stabbing of a woman outside a Sydney gym escaped jail time only last week after breaching an AVO against the same woman twice, 9News can reveal.

Anthony Monteleone handed himself into Dee Why police station at 7.50am today after a 39-year-old woman was stabbed at a car park outside of Crunch Fitness in Alexandria at 12.30pm yesterday.

Just nine days ago, Monteleone was sentenced to an 18-month intensive corrections order at Manly Court after he breached an apprehended violence order against the 39-year-old woman two times, 9News understands.

At the time of his sentencing last week, a new AVO lasting two years was put into place, banning him from seeing or contacting the woman.

The man was charged with causing/wounding grievous bodily harm to a person with intent to murder (DV) and contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (domestic) this afternoon.

The woman was allegedly stabbed in the head, upper body and ear at the car park on O'Riordan Street yesterday.

He is believed to have carried out the alleged attack with a large kitchen knife.

The woman was treated and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The man was arrested after he attended Dee Why police station this morning.

Investigators said yesterday they believed the woman and her alleged attacker were known to each other, with Detective Superintendent Rodney Hart calling it a "targeted attack."

"We've identified that we believe the offender in this matter is known to the victim," Hart said while addressing the media.

He also alleged it was a domestic violence-related attack, with the woman believed to have dated the man for a short period of time.

"It's horrendous what has happened to this poor victim," Hart said.
