Wins, losses of leaders' election debate

PRIME MINISTER SCOTT MORRISON

WIN: Mr Morrison again pressed his rival on what his policies will cost. He also highlighted the number of people who will be affected by Labor's proposed tax reforms, and cast an air of stability around the Liberal Party by stressing he will always lead it from "the middle".

LOSS: Mr Shorten stressed that carbon emissions have increased under the coalition in the past two terms, blunting Mr Morrison's argument that his party is best placed to deal with climate change in a responsible way.

LABOR LEADER BILL SHORTEN

WIN: Mr Shorten big-noted Labor's plans to invest in extra cancer treatment and childcare subsidies, and emphasised that the prime minister has no plan to match them. He also accused his opponent of being out of touch with what people are paying for such services.

LOSS: The Labor leader was unable to produce costings for climate policy as requested by the prime minister, but pointed to them being released on Friday. He was also reminded of his role in deposing former Labor prime minister's Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, forcing him to reiterate that he regretted the instability of the time.
