Windsor advice for SA independent MPs

Former federal MP Tony Windsor has just one piece of advice for two South Australian independents - don't try and be the government.

Mr Windsor joked "I'd just say `no'" when asked if had any advice for Bob Such and Geoff Brock, who are locked in negotiations with Labor and the Liberals after Saturday's inconclusive state election.

The former MP's career will be best remembered for his support of Prime Minister Julia Gillard, when he and fellow independent Rob Oakeshott propped up a minority Labor government after the 2010 election.

"The only advice I'd give them (Such and Brock) - and they're big enough and ugly enough to look after themselves - is not try and become the government," he told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

"Whether they do that or not they'll be blamed for everything that's wrong."

Despite the controversies surrounding the Gillard government, Mr Windsor said there were a lot of very good things that happen in a hung parliament,

He questioned whether a royal commission into child sex abuse would have been commissioned by a majority government.

"The pressure the churches would have been applied in that situation would have made sure that that commission never occurred," he said.
