Weekend thunderstorms to envelop several states
Severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and widespread rain are set to blast Australia’s east this weekend.
The wild weather, driven by a cold front and a low-pressure trough pulling down warm, humid air from the tropics is set to rock several states including Queensland, NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT over the next two days.
Saturday’s stormy weather may also extend up to parts of northern Queensland and across to eastern NSW. Weatherzone
The system began building on Friday, bringing rain to parts of South Australia and scattered storms and rainfall across inland Queensland.
On Saturday, the cold front is set to move across the southeast, blasting Victoria, Tasmania, NSW, the ACT, and southeastern South Australia with rain, damaging winds, and potential storms.
Because these storm cells move so quickly, heavy prolonged downpours are less likely, but the threat of powerful wind gusts is high.
A low-pressure trough and cold front will trigger widespread showers and thunderstorms across Australia’s eastern and southeastern states this weekend. Weatherzone
Melbourne’s highest storm risk will fall between Saturday’s late morning and early afternoon, while Canberra faces storms later in the afternoon and early evening.
Powerful northwesterly winds may also whip mountain ranges in northeast Victoria and southern NSW.
Conditions in the southeast will calm down by Sunday once the system moves offshore, while further north, Queensland and NSW face a heightened risk of severe storms across the entire weekend.
On Saturday, an inland band stretching from central NSW into southern Queensland could see severe cells with damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain.
Sydney also faces the chance of an afternoon or evening storm.
By Sunday, the storm risk will shift toward northeastern NSW and southeastern Queensland, with Brisbane in line for storms during the afternoon or early evening.
