Multiple wedge-tailed eagles have been found shot dead in regional New South Wales, sparking a police investigation.

Police were told an injured young eagle was found on a property on Dollar Value Road at Eurongilly, about 22km south-east of Junee in the state's south, on Saturday, April 5.

WIRES attended the property on Sunday and found six young wedge-tailed eagles dead.

The injured eagle was put down due to the severity of its wounds.

A vet examined the carcasses and told police the birds had most likely been shot dead.

Wedge-tailed eagles are a protected species in Australia and any offender, if convicted, could face up to two years in prison.

Investigators are calling for anybody with information to contact Junee police, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
