Sydneysiders housebound by the weekend superstorm have been left frustrated after a web outage knocked ATMs, credit cards, Foxtel and other entertainment sites offline.

Amazon Web Services, which hosts the sites, was plagued by connectivity issues for at least two hours yesterday afternoon, Mashable reports.

Foxtel, Stan and food delivery app Menulog went down, along with Domino's.

A separate outage hit debit cards, ATMs and Eftpos machines last night.

Westpac and Commonwealth Bank customers took to social media to complain, with a number saying they were forced to leave shopping trolley loads of groceries behind as they could not pay for them.

An Amazon spokesman was unable to pinpoint the cause of the Sydney "power event".

"We can confirm that instances have experienced a power event within a single Availability Zone in the AP-SOUTHEAST-2 Region. Error rates for the EC2 APIs have improved and launches of new EC2 instances are succeeding within the other Availability Zones in the Region," the spokesman said.

The harbour city is one of AWS' key infrastructure regions in the Asia Pacific, along with Singapore.

Twitter predictably lit up with outage outrage.

"It's a rainy Sunday night, and Stand and Menulog are both offline. What is this fresh hell," said Sophy Jones.
