Driver rescued from floodwaters as intense rain pummels NSW coast

A severe weather warning has been issued for parts of New South Wales, as intense rain pummels the state's South Coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology said heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding is forecast for the Illawarra and parts of the South Coast, Southern and Central Tablelands and metropolitan districts today and through tomorrow afternoon.

Scattered six-hourly rainfall totals between 50mm and 100mm are likely with isolated totals around 150mm possible.

Scattered 24-hourly rainfall totals between 100mm and 150mm are likely with isolated totals around 250mm possible.

Heavy rainfall is occurring around Nowra and Jervis Bay, and is expected to extend northward later this afternoon and evening.

The NSW Rural Fire Service Huskisson brigade rescued a man stuck in floodwaters at Woollamia this morning.

The man was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics once crews got him out of his car.

"This is a serious reminder to obey all road closures, especially during this period of severe weather," the brigade said on social media.

"If it's flooded, forget it."

Conditions are expected to ease across the warning area during the latter parts of Friday as the trough moves back south and weakens.

A flood watch is current for parts of the central coast, Sydney metropolitan area, Illawarra and South Coast while various flood warnings are also current.

The rain from today's trough is expected to add to catchments already wet with recent rain.
