Severe thunderstorms to hit parts of Australia's south-east

Severe thunderstorms are expected to impact parts of Australia's south east today, with South Australia facing the brunt of the impact.

It follows a turbulent 24 hours of weather in Victoria, where a small rural town was pelted with golf ball-sized hail.

Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) Senior Meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said thunderstorms would sweep east towards Adelaide today, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall.

"South Australia will be the focal point for storms (today) with severe storms possible across most of the state including around Adelaide," Bradbury said.

"Heavy falls are also possible through parts of eastern South Australia but slightly less likely than the damaging wind gusts and large hail."

The BOM said the wild weather could lead to trees falling down, power outages and localised flash flooding.

A severe weather warning remains in place for damaging winds for multiple parts of the state, including Port Pirie.

Melbourne and Sydney are both expected to see thunderstorms develop.

The BOM said the wild weather is due to a strong cold front and low-pressure system that is moving across the country's south-east, which is providing suitable conditions for storms.

Rain and thunderstorms will continue to spread tomorrow, with parts of NSW, Victoria and Queensland affected by wet and stormy weather.
