High-pressure system set to cause havoc in four states

Cold morning temperatures and higher rainfall are expected across south-east Australia as a high-pressure system brings strong weather conditions across several states.

The system is currently sitting over Tasmania, bringing chilly morning temperatures and fog to the island state, as well as parts of Victoria, including Melbourne.

Melbourne woke up to temperatures as low as 6 degrees on Sunday morning, while Hobart shivered through 3 degrees. The lowest temperature recorded was -4.7 degrees in Liawenee in Tasmania’s interior.

The cold temperatures remained in Melbourne on Monday, with fog blanketing parts of the city and temperatures sitting at 7 degrees.

Weatherzone’s Ben Domensino said the high-pressure system was bringing “widespread impact” to much of the country.

“Areas more directly underneath the central parts of this high will experience generally clear and calm conditions,” he said.

“This has allowed temperatures to drop quite significantly on Sunday morning,” 

“Further widespread fog and frosts are expected over the next few mornings.”

The system is also bringing wet conditions to the New South Wales coastline and south-east Queensland.

Up to 30mm of rain is expected to fall between the New South Wales South Coast and the North Tropical Coast in Queensland between now and Wednesday, stretching 3000 kilometres.

Parts of the Northern Rivers in New South Wales received between 20 and 40mm of rain last week.

Sydney copped 7mm of rain on Sunday and could receive another 5mm on Monday, with heavy isolated falls seen on Monday morning.

Showers in Sydney are expected to ease by Wednesday, while temperatures in the harbour city are not expected to be as cold as in Melbourne.
