Further rain and possible severe thunderstorms for SA and NSW after deluge

After parts of South Australia and western NSW got some of their best rain in years, further falls are forecast for day.

An embedded low with troughs and a front are generating widespread showers and storms over eastern South Australia, western and central Queensland, western NSW, including some which are severe.

A front over southwest Western Australia is causing showers and gusty winds. Onshore winds are causing showers over northeast Queensland and the Top End.

Here's the state-by-state forecast for Sunday, September 20, 2020:

QUEENSLAND

A slight to medium chance of showers about western and southern districts and the east coast, increasing to a medium to high chance about the southeast. The chance of thunderstorm in the west and southern interior. There is a risk of severe thunderstorms in southwestern districts during the morning.

Mostly sunny elsewhere with top temperatures of 29C in Townsville and 27C in Brisbane. Maximum and minimum temperatures generally near or above average along the east coast and well above average elsewhere.

Moderate to fresh northeast to northwesterly winds, with light to moderate east to northeasterly winds in the north.

Fire Danger - Very High in the Peninsula

NEW SOUTH WALES & THE ACT

A few showers, mainly in the east. The chance of a thunderstorm about the ranges and inland, mainly in the morning.

Dry and sunny in the far west.

Daytime temperatures above average, most notably in the west where highs are forecast to reach 31C in Bourke and 27C in Mildura.

Moderate to fresh northeast to northwesterly winds.

VICTORIA

Rain areas in the north contracting to the northeast during the morning. Scattered showers elsewhere, quickly becoming isolated about the far northwest and the Gippsland coast, and generally clearing across western districts during the day.

Showers redeveloping through the west in the evening. Isolated thunderstorms possible about the northeast in the morning, and in the west late.

A mild to warm, humid and mostly cloudy day, with moderate to fresh north to northwesterly winds, strong and gusty about Alpine areas early. Top temperatures of 23C in Melbourne and Bendigo, a much cooler 8C at Falls Creek, where overnight lows will drop to 6C.

TASMANIA

Drizzle or showers about the north, developing about central areas and the west during the afternoon.

Mainly fine elsewhere with highs of 22C in Swansea and 23C in Hobart.

Fresh north to northeasterly winds, strong about the east, tending north to northwesterly in the afternoon and evening, and easing.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

A slight to medium chance of showers about the southern agricultural area, grading to a high to very high chance of showers over the South East districts, mostly during the afternoon or evening.

Possible thunderstorms about the east of the agricultural area in the late afternoon or evening.

Warm in the south with 27C the top temp for Adelaide and grading to hot in the north, where temperatures will reach 37C in Oodnadatta.

Freshening northeast to northwesterly winds shifting cooler southwesterly over western and central parts during the afternoon or evening.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Gusty showers with small hail about southern and western parts of the South West Land Division with mainly light falls inland.

A chance of a gusty thunderstorm over the South West, South Coastal and South East Coastal districts, contracting to southern coastal parts during the morning.

Possible damaging winds with showers and thunderstorms along the south coast in the morning and early afternoon.

Highs of 15C in Bunbury and 16C in Perth, dipping down into single digits overnight.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

A slight to medium chance of a shower or thunderstorm over the Top End, Carpentaria, Gregory and Barkly Districts.

Sunny elsewhere. A top of 32C in Darwin and 36C in Alice Springs.

Light to moderate northeast to northwest winds, fresh and gusty at times over southern Tanami, Lasseter and Simpson Districts, with a cooler southwesterly change developing over the Lasseter and southern Simpson district during the evening.

Fire Danger - Very High south of Ti Tree.
