Southern States warned to prepare for dangerous wintry blast

Southern states are being warned to prepare for a dangerous blast of wild wintry weather, as a large cold front sweeps in.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, as well as southern NSW from tomorrow.

Conditions will be especially treacherous the coast. In Adelaide, the public is being warned of the risk of falling trees in the fierce gusts, and to tie down anything that could blow away.

Authorities are also particularly concerned for holiday-makers in South Australia, with wind gusts in excess of 100km/hour along the state's coastline. Waves will be as high as 7m, and the State Emergency Service says it will have all volunteers on standby.

Matt Bass from the Bureau of Meteorology, said: “We're likely to see wind gusts throughout the broad area of South Australia in excess of 90km/h but some coastal parts could see wind gusts in excess of 100km/h, even locally more than that.

"As the cold front moves across the state over the course of tomorrow afternoon - heavy bursts of rain are likely up to 15 millimetres possible across the suburbs, and close to 30 millimetres in the hills.

Damaging winds will develop from the morning in South Australia, hitting Adelaide on Wednesday afternoon.

Victoria will also be impacted tomorrow afternoon, before the wild weather moves into Tasmania by the evening.

The front will bring showers and a few thunderstorms. 

The conditions will begin to ease Thursday, but the Weather Bureau says another cold front is due on Friday.

Meanwhile Canberra is set to face overnight temperatures as low as -4C this week, with daytime temperatures only reaching between 9-12C- cooler than those seen on the past week.

Snow showers are possible about Mt Ginini. 

Meanwhile, in Perth, after a series of strong cold front crossed the southwest, the week ahead will be much more settled.

Clearing skies and light winds could see a few cooler mornings from the weekend onwards, with days will be trending towards warm, reaching 22C by Monday.
