Freezing weather hits as chilly blast of winter settles in eastern Australia

Australia's eastern states are in for a chilly blast of winter weather this week, with the nation's capital set to see below-freezing temperatures overnight.

Canberra residents will shiver through a week of subzero nights, with the coldest evening on Wednesday expected to be -4 degrees.

The day will see a maximum of just 11.

Overnight on Sunday, both Melbourne and Sydney dropped to 6 degrees overnight, with nighttime temperatures to remain on the cold side all week.

Sydney can expect maximum temperatures around 16 this week, rising to a warmer 19 by the weekend.

Further south, a wind warning is in place for the Snowy Mountains, including Thredbo, today.

Winds of 80 to 90km/h are expected, with peak gusts in excess of 125km/h forecast.

More snow is also on the way for the alpine regions of Victoria, NSW and Tasmania.

Meanwhile, Melbourne will see a cool high of 11 all week, with overnight lows of 4 and 5 degrees.

Showers will hit on Thursday.

Adelaide can expect a week of showers, with temperatures hovering at a max of 12 degrees.

Brisbane will be a sunny 22 all week.
