Mother ‘tried taking blame for son’ over fatal hit-run

A mother has been charged after allegedly trying to take the blame for her son over a hit-and-run incident in Sydney which killed a young woman.

A 20-year-old woman was crossing Lachlan Street at the intersection of Sam Sing Street when she was struck by a white car in Waterloo about 2.15pm on Thursday.

The car, believed to be a Kia Rio, then took off, leaving the victim with critical injuries.

The 20-year-old was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital, but died later.

Police attended the Dapto home of a 50-year-old woman yesterday, during which she allegedly confessed to being the driver involved in the incident – contrary to evidence.

The woman was then taken to Wollongong Police Station where she was charged with hindering police and knowingly making a false statement in the attempt to pervert the course of justice.

Not long afterwards, the woman’s 21-year-old son handed himself into police and was charged with five crimes including dangerous driving occasioning death, failing to stop, driving through a red light and driving unlicensed. 

Around 7.10pm last night, police arrested another 21-year-old man in Wollongong. 

The man, alleged to have been a passenger in the car at the time of the accident, was charged with concealing a serious offence. 

All three people were refused bail and are expected to appear at Wollongong Local Court today.
