Warrant issued for baseball star

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of former Australian Baseball League player Troy Scott after he failed to appear in an Adelaide Court to face an assault charge.

The 22-year-old, who has since returned to the United States, has also been ordered to forfeit a $10,000 cash surety.

The case against Scott was listed for trial in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday but his lawyer Craig Caldicott said he was in America.

Scott was a pitcher for the Adelaide Bite when it was alleged he assaulted Melbourne Aces player Kellin Deglan during a fight at Adelaide's Norwood Oval in January last year.

Deglan, who suffered facial injuries and required dental work, returned to Australia for the trial at his own expense and the court is yet to consider whether he will be reimbursed for his travel costs.

Outside the court Mr Caldicott, who was also granted permission to withdraw from the file, said he imagined the warrant would be executed and Scott extradited to Australia.

But whether authorities were willing to take such action was a matter for them.

He had hoped his client had returned for the trial because he believed Scott had a defence to the charge because he went to the aid of a teammate.

"If you see the footage you'll see a player was being surrounded by people from the other team and he went in with a view to protecting that person," Mr Caldicott said.
