One in every 25 Australian homes could be uninsurable by 2030: report

The Climate Council is warning one in every 25 Australian homes will be uninsurable by 2030 due to worsening weather.

The study found flooding was the most common risk followed by bushfires and then coastal inundation from rising sea levels.

Climate Council found as extreme weather events increase, so does the risk of damage and maintenance causing premiums to become too expensive.

According to the report, five federal electorates in Queensland are among the top 10 most at-risk by 2030.

These include Brisbane, Maranoa, Moncrieff, Wright and Griffith.

The other at-risk electorates include Richmond and Page in New South Wales, Nicholls in Victoria and Hindmarsh in South Australia.

The report predicts around one in every seven properties in these at-risk electorates will be uninsurable this decade.

The report has also predicted the percentage of properties that will be uninsurable by 2030 in each state and territory.

Queensland is at the greatest risk at 6.5 per cent, followed by NSW at 3.3 per cent and South Australia at 3.2 per cent.

In Victoria 2.6 per cent of properties could be insurable in eight years, followed by 2.5 per cent in the Northern Territory, 2.4 per cent in Western Australia, 2 per cent in Tasmania and 1.3 per cent in the Australian Capital Territory.
