Chaotic winds destroy homes during severe storm over historic WA town

Dangerous winds have completely destroyed six homes and damaged 10 more during a chaotic storm in Western Australia's Pilbara region overnight.

An isolated severe thunderstorm developed over Marble Bar, south-east of Port Headland, about 6.15pm AWST yesterday.

The WA Department of Fire and Emergency Service (DFES) said winds of up to 113km/h had either destroyed or damaged the 16 properties.

"DFES is currently investigating whether there is any further damage to properties," a spokesperson said.

"Given the town's age, we are aware that asbestos may be a concern so we are advising the community to take care when examining damage around their property."

No injuries have been reported.

ADF to build temporary bridge to give access to flood-ravaged town

More than 60 properties were left without power.

Horizon Power has restored power to 50 homes and has deployed crews to the town today to help reconnect another 15.

DFES crews are also on site providing aid to residents that were impacted.

A storm watch and act warning is in place advising the community to stay away from damaged buildings and other hazards like live electricity, leaking gas, fallen trees, low or dropping branches and damaged infrastructure.

There remains a potential threat to lives and buildings.

As a precautionary measure, people in the area have been urged to remain inside with doors and windows closed and to avoid areas damaged by the storm.

Those outside the warning area are advised to stay away from the area.

Marble Bar is known for holding the title of Australia's hottest town since 1924 after its residents endured the world's longest heatwave for 160 days.
