WA govt lifts pensioner rebate for rates
The West Australian government has backflipped on a budget announcement to cap council rate rebates for pensioners at $550 after criticism from seniors groups.
Finance Minister Bill Marmion told parliament on Tuesday local government rates would now be capped at $750, although water rate concessions would remain at $600.
The original caps were revealed in the 2015-16 state budget and come into effect on July 1 this year.
"The government has taken on board concerns raised by the Self-funded Retirees Association and listened to feedback from one of the most vulnerable sectors of our community," Mr Marmion told parliament.
"This will reduce the impact on pensioner households affected by the cap from around 47,000 to 19,300."
