WA govt called on to fund shark barrier

The West Australian government is being asked to pick up the tab to protect swimmers from sharks at a popular Perth beach.

The City of Cockburn will reinstall its eco shark barrier at Coogee Beach for the next three years at a cost of $85,000.

Mayor Logan Howlett said the response from the community to the barrier during last summer's initial four-month trial had been an overwhelmingly positive.

The City is happy to retain the barrier but Mr Howlett said the council would continue to ask the state government to fund it.

Mr Howlett said no shark attacks had been reported at Coogee Beach but it was important for beachgoers to have a safe swimming environment and peace of mind.

"While WA's beaches are some of our best natural assets, recent incidents in our waters have scared the public who are looking for a safe alternative to continue to enjoy our beautiful beach lifestyle," Mr Howlett said.

"The eco shark barrier provides that alternative."
