WA government puts gun reforms in sights

A review into Western Australia's gun laws aims to cut "red tape" and will not result in more firearms in the state, Police Minister Liza Harvey says.

A Law Reform Commission discussion paper has outlined possible changes to the Firearms Act, highlighting the dangers of 3D printed weapons and questioning whether guns should be permitted for use by Aboriginal people in traditional hunting.

Ms Harvey said there was a frustrating amount of red tape for recreational shooters, but the state government had to deliver balanced legislation that both protected the community and reduced bureaucracy.

"I think the system has become quite bogged down and become quite prescriptive," Ms Harvey told AAP.
