WA firefighters peachy keen on new arsenal

West Australian firefighters have welcomed a heavy hitter to the battle against summer bushfires.

The Georgia Peach, an Erickson Aircrane that can carry up to 7000 litres of water, is one of six being provided across Australia as part of the National Aerial Firefighting Arrangement.

Federal Minister for Justice Michael Keenan said the arrangement, which consists of almost 100 aircraft, allowed states and territories to share specialised resources that would otherwise be out of reach.

But don't expect a firefighter to turn up at your house to tell you what to do, WA emergency services acting minister Liza Harvey said.

Mrs Harvey said while emergency services were primed for another challenging fire season, the whole community needed to be prepared.

"If you've been thinking about a bushfire plan, do it today," Mrs Harvey said.
