WA cop faces court on child sex charges

A 41-year-old WA police officer accused of child sex offences has been granted unsupervised access to his children after appearing in court.

The sergeant, whose identity is suppressed, appeared in Mandurah Courthouse on Friday charged with using electronic communication with intent to expose a child under 13 to indecent matter and encouraging a child to do an indecent act.

The offences allegedly involved a Facebook video and message earlier this month.

He has been stood down from duties but can have access to his 12 and 14-year-old children, who have been interviewed by child protection authorities.

The officer's defence lawyer said it was impractical for him not to have access to his children and the court heard there were no concerns for their safety or welfare.

The man, who worked in the Perth metropolitan area and whose wife remains supportive, did not physically interfere with the male victim.

He unsuccessfully sought to have the court closed to the public and will next face court on December 8.
