Smokers warned not to butt out in bush

Smokers have been warned not to carelessly butt out this bushfire season.

Australia is predicted to have a warmer than usual summer, with vast areas of Western Australia excepted to face an above average fire risk.

Cigarette butts could cause ground fuels to smoulder for long periods, and a hot and windy day could then spark a bushfire, Department of Fire and Emergency Services deputy commissioner Lloyd Bailey said.

Mr Bailey said DFES attended more than 500 mulch fires a year, most started by discarded cigarette butts.

People who carelessly dispose a cigarette butt in WA face a fine of up to $500.

Anyone ditching a burning cigarette, cigar or match, including throwing it from a vehicle, during a total fire ban could face a $25,000 fine and/or 12 months in jail.
