It looks like a turret from a 1980s sci-fi film, but its on the side of a highway in Western Australia and its tracking people's driving.

Police have confirmed this silver box with a sinister-looking glass slit is actually a speed-camera.

"WA Police Force can confirm it is trialling a new speed monitoring device," police said.

"This is part of ongoing efforts to find new and innovative ways to enforce laws that enhance road safety for all users."

The camera was installed on the Great Eastern Highway just in time for double demerits on the Easter long weekend.

The speed camera was posted on 6PR Breakfast's Facebook page, and plenty weighed in with their thoughts.

"Remember folks it's only revenue raising if you get caught," Shane Mass Henney wrote.

"No speeding = No fine = no revenue."

Oliver R Coppen had another take.

"Come to WA: marvel at our truly ugly speed camera hidey things! Looks like a bunker! N Korea will wanna drop a bomb on it!" he wrote.
