Shorten tells PM to act on Irons travel

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has called on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to act over revelations a WA MP charged taxpayers for flights to attend his own wedding.

WA Liberal MP Steve Irons charged taxpayers more than $2000 for return flights to attend his own wedding, amid a string of travel controversies involving the backbencher.

Mr Irons says the 2011 flights had been claimed in error and the money was repaid.

"It's certainly not a good look - it's up to Mr Turnbull to answer the question is it satisfactory and what he's doing about it," Mr Shorten told reporters.

"I think he just needs to explain does he think this is appropriate conduct and what steps is he taking if he doesn't think it's appropriate conduct to make sure it doesn't happen and what are the consequences.

"I know that Australians don't think that we should be using taxpayer money to go to a wedding. I think that's a bad idea."
