Sharks feed on whales off WA beaches

Two public warnings have been issued about sharks feeding on whale carcasses off a Perth beach and further north at Geraldton.

Videos were posted on social media over the weekend showing a tiger shark and six-metre great white attacking the dead whale at Staggies Reef, off Mindarie.

Fisherman Brendan McGregor was out with a friend on Saturday only a kilometre offshore when he shot the vision and posted it on his fishing business page RIPPA Gauges and more vision was posted by another fisherman on Twitter by @mitchy_AB_17.

Surf Life Saving WA and fisheries officials issued warnings.

"It is possible the decomposing carcass will continue to act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming close in to shore along this stretch of coast," Department of Fisheries said.

Water users including divers were advised to take extra caution at least 5km either side of Mindarie and Staggie Reef.

Nursing lecturer and grandmother Doreen Collyer was killed by a large shark off the coast of Mindarie in June 2016.

Fisheries issued another warning on Sunday when a school of sharks was reported feeding on an eight-metre humpback whale carcass only 400m offshore at Back Beach, Geraldton.
