Shark spotting to trial at 3 WA beaches

Three beaches in Western Australia's South West have been earmarked to trial a South African shark spotting program.

Representatives from Shark Spotters toured WA's metro and South West beaches last week, assessing the feasibility of introducing the program that places trained spotters above beaches.

Castle Bay, Meelup and Smiths Beach were floated as potential sites for the Shark Spotters program, as Perth's metro beaches do not have enough height to provide an adequate vantage point.

The program was introduced to eight beaches on South Africa's Western Cape in 2004, with more than 1000 sightings resulting since its implementation.
