Sex offender bail move no stunt: WA Libs

The WA government has introduced legislative amendments to make securing bail tougher for serious sex offenders ahead of their sentencing, but the changes can't pass until after next year's state election.

Attorney-General Michael Mischin announced the Bail Act changes in August in response to "Evil 8" pedophile Ryan Trevor Clegg, who lived near a school and childcare centre while on bail before his sentencing.

Mr Mischin admits the changes, introduced on the Legislative Assembly's final sitting day of the year on Thursday, will lapse and need to be re-introduced if the Liberals win a third term in the March state election.

"It's not by definition a stunt ... the legislation is already before the house, this is a proposed further amendment to that legislation and ... demonstrates our commitment that we will pursue that issue when parliament resumes next year," Mr Mischin said.

"This is a long-term approach.

"After appropriate consultation, it is being introduced as a commitment we will proceed with next year.

"There was simply not the opportunity to do it this year."
