'Dumped like rubbish': Mums speak out after cars taken with kids inside

Two mothers have spoken exclusively with 9News, recounting the terrifying moment their cars were stolen with their young children inside.

A 15-year-old boy was denied bail over the Kalgoorlie carjackings on Wednesday afternoon. He is accused of dumping two toddlers on the side of the road. 

One-year-old Drayus and his 10-month-old brother DJ were asleep in the family car, the air conditioning running as their mother Tatum took groceries inside.

The car was taken with the children still strapped in their car seats.

"I started crying that my kids were gone," Tatum told 9News.

The siblings were allegedly dumped on the side of the road a few streets away, with security cameras catching their distressing cries.

"They were found on the side of the road, just dumped there like rubbish."

A few kilometres later, the allegedly stolen car crashed.

It's alleged the teenage driver then carjacked another vehicle outside a recycling depot.

A nine-year-old boy was in the front passenger seat. His mother gave chase and was run over as she was dragged, suffering injuries from elbow to toe.

"I didn't want to let go of the door handle, yeah, I just didn't want to let go," she told 9News.

The boy managed to escape the moving car as it was driven along a dirt track.

"You just feel hopeless," the mother said.

Asked how her son was now, she said he was "excellent".

"He has handled it like a soldier."

A court heard the accused thief was already on an intensive supervision order with a long history of offending.

When he was arrested, the 15-year-old is believed to have asked, "Are the kids alright?"

The parents of the toddlers are now grappling with the possibility their insurance may not cover their wrecked car.

"All my partner's hard work has just, yeah, makes me sad ... but yeah," Tatum said. 

"But so grateful, so grateful for our boys. It could have been so much worse."

The teenager was denied bail.
