A man is feared dead after a shark attack at a Perth beach, with emergency services currently on the scene.

Police were called to Sorrento Beach at about 10.30am on Friday after reports of a swimmer in distress.

9News understands the man was about 50 metres from shore when he was attacked.

Surf Life Saving WA confirmed an investigation into a possible shark attack was under way.

“The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) received a report of a possible shark incident at approximately 10.15am on 18 September 2026,” a statement on the Shark Smart website said.

“DPIRD is working with local authorities, and further information will be provided as it becomes available.”

A statement on social media said the reported sighting was around 50 metres offshore, but did not specify the type of shark spotted.

St John Ambulance sent three vehicles to the scene under priority one conditions at about 10.15am, but were stood down.

Water Police and a Police Air Wing have been deployed at the scene.

Sorrento Beach is currently closed.
