Perth's 'Spud King' to pay $40k penalty

Perth's maverick "Spud King" Tony Galati has been fined $40,000 for contempt of court after growing more potatoes than he was allowed.

The industry regulator the Potato Marketing Corporation was abolished last year, but the Spud Shed franchise owner has still been punished for disobeying a 2015 Supreme Court order.

Mr Galati, who pocketed an extra $148,000 in revenue for growing the forbidden spuds, has also agreed to pay $200,000 towards the state's court costs.
