Panama-flagged bulk carrier detained in WA

A Panama-flagged bulk carrier has been detained at a West Australian port amid concerns about the welfare of the crew.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority boarded and inspected the vessel at a grain jetty in Esperance after receiving a complaint from the International Transport Workers Federation.

AMSA said it discovered several deficiencies aboard the MV Apellis, including seafarers not being repatriated when their contracts ended and crew not being paid, as well as one crew member being worked beyond medical restrictions.
