New milestone for Perth’s Children’s Hospital

There’s a new major milestone for Perth Children's Hospital today with the first surgeries taking place.

Eight-year-old Ziggy Dean was the first brave patient to be operated on in the new theatres early this morning.

He had his adenoids taken out, which doctors say is a simple and common procedure among children to fix breathing problems.

Ziggy's mum says his surgery went well - his throat is still a little sore but he's in good spirits and in recovery.

“His experience here will probably be something he can take away, fear of the unknown,” his mother Sara said.

A total of three surgeries were performed today at PCH by ENT surgeon Paul Bumbak.

He says there were some minor teething problems operating in the new facility but nothing which compromised patient safety.

“Just having sort of instruments in theatre which I think some stuff that wasn't made available to us,” Dr Paul Bumbak said.

“It's just only small minor stuff but again it was no detriment to our patient care today.”

Another small round of elective surgeries will be performed on Thursday by a Gastroenterology.

It's all part of the plan to ramp up procedures and workplace practices before the final move day on June 10 when Princess Margaret Hospital closes and the PCH emergency department opens at 7am.
