Perth pizza robber said family was hungry

A 25-year-old Zimbabwean man has been handed a 15-month jail term in WA for robbing a delivery driver of $80 in cash and pizzas.

Albert Panashe Bere's partner phoned in the order for four family-sized pizzas worth $69.90 on the night of February 6 last year and asked for them to be delivered to an address about 75 metres from their Balga home.

Bere waited at the rear fence of his property for the driver to arrive then ran up to him and threatened him with violence.

Six days later, police searched Bere's home and found the four empty pizza boxes.

He told them: "My family hasn't eaten for a week - I was desperate".

"I think I scared that guy and I wanted to pay them back and apologise. I just didn't know how," Bere said.

Supreme Court of WA Justice Joseph McGrath noted Bere was remorseful and had expressed sympathy towards his victim, and made him eligible for parole after serving half his term.

He has already been in custody for 237 days.
