Major cold front brings strong winds and rain to parts of WA

A major cold front hitting WA has brought winds of up to 130km/h and 80mm of rain to parts of the state.

Perth is expected to receive 20 to 35mm of rain today, with heavy rainfall expected at about midday.

Rainfall totals up to 70mm have been recorded in the Margaret River area in the 24 hours to 9am this morning, and Bunbury recorded 44mm.

Local residents woke up to flooding near the Margaret River Hotel at about 6am this morning.

"Being in a bit of a valley we got a heap of rain, it just seemed to build up right in the middle of town here," resident Malcom Roberts said.

"This morning I couldn't see five metres in front of the car, bit hectic out there."

A gust of 130km/hr was recorded at Cape Leeuwin after 5am today, which is the strongest gust there for two years.

A severe weather warning is in place for Geraldton to Albany for damaging winds up to 110km/hr, and heavy rainfall that could cause flash flooding and abnormally high tides.
