A local engineer, businessman and former journalist will go head-to-head in Western Australia's wine region.

The Vasse by-election, which was triggered by the resignation of former state treasurer Troy Buswell, will be held on October 18.

The Liberals will stand Libby Mettam, a journalist-turned-media adviser for state MP Barry House, in the South West seat.

Busselton businessman Peter Gordon will stand for the Nationals, while structural engineer Michael Baldock will represent the Greens, as he did in the March 2013 election.

All three live and work in the South West area.

Labor will not stand a candidate.

Mr Buswell, 48, quit state cabinet in March and resigned from politics in September following a string of indiscretions that ended with revelations he had had several car crashes while returning home from a wedding in February.
