‘Shattered and heartbroken’: Perth father dies after alleged assault in Bali
A Perth father has died in hospital after he was allegedly assaulted at a bar in Bali.
Paul Dougan spent almost a fortnight in hospital fighting for his life with broken ribs and internal bleeding after the alleged attack on the popular Indonesian island.

Dougan’s son Liam said he was “shattered, lost and heartbroken” over his father’s death in an update shared to Instagram on Thursday.
“It wasn’t meant to be this way Dad,” he wrote.
“I will love and remember you for the rest of my life and I will continue to make you proud.”

Liam earlier said his father had been “brutally assaulted by a group of Australians who are yet to be identified”.
“They beat and kicked him multiple times putting him in a life-threatening condition,” he said.
“They are the reason I will never see my dad again. They are the reason my kids one day won’t meet their pop.
“Why did this happen? Why my dad? Questions that I will never the answer to.”
Dougan underwent three major surgeries, had his spleen removed and required four blood transfusions as doctors attempted to save his life.
Liam also said his father had drains in both his lungs and abdomen as a result of the internal injuries and bleeding from the attack.
Liam set up a crowdfunding page to raise funds for his father’s stay in the intensive care unit.
“We have been doing everything we can to fund his treatment ourselves,” he said.
He said the family paid more than $71,000 for hospital treatment.
The fundraising page raised more than $33,000.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported Paul and our family through this incredibly difficult time,” Liam added.
A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson said it had not been providing consular assistance to the family.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade provides consular assistance to Australian citizens overseas,” a spokesperson said.
“We do not have a consular role in this matter.
“Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment.”
