Don Randall's daughter not a candidate

Don Randall's daughter will not seek preselection for her late father's West Australian federal seat of Canning.

Tess Randall was touted as a strong contender to replace the veteran MP, who died from a heart attack last month, and was remembered by his colleagues in a condolence motion in parliament on Monday.

Seven people have applied for pre-selection, including Afghanistan war veteran Andrew Hastie, Pierrette Kelly who is an electorate officer for Senator Chris Back, and former demolition and earthworks businessman Steve Marshall.

The other applicants are Daniel Nikolic, Lance Scott, Ashley King and Marisa Hislop.

The selection committee will meet on Saturday.

It is understood the Liberals aim to launch their candidate at the party's state conference in Perth on August 22 and 23.

The ALP will open its nominations on Thursday and will close on August 23.

Labor's frontrunner is expected to be Law Society of WA president and senior associate Matthew Keogh, who was once a policy adviser in the Gallop government.

The Greens are also planning to stand a candidate.

Once the date is set, the by-election will be formally announced in federal parliament by Speaker Tony Smith.
